What is Tumbling Team?

Trampoline and Tumbling is a gymnastics discipline that was founded in 1936. It includes the four events: power tumbling, trampoline, synchronized trampoline, and double mini trampoline.

Meet The Tumbling Director

Matthew Alex

My name is Matthew Alex and I am the Head Coach of the Trampoline and Tumbling Team here at GAR. With 15 years of coaching experience in Tumbling and Trampoline, I’ve had the privilege of coaching athletes at all levels from sub-novice to Elite. I’ve served as the head coach for the USTA National Team three times and was honored to be named Northern Illinois Coach of the Year. In 2022, I was selected for the USTA Coach of the Year. Additionally, I have led the tumbling portion at USTA Congress as a clinician on three occasions.

Throughout my career, I’ve maintained the largest team in the region, but my true goal as a coach extends beyond building exceptional athletes. I strive to make a positive impact on the youth I work with by teaching life skills through the sport, empowering them to reach and realize their full potential—not just as athletes, but as individuals.

We start every practice saying, as loud as we can, "Today I will be great. Today I will try my best. And today, nothing can stop me." This mantra encapsulates my coaching philosophy and the spirit I instill in my athletes.
